Embark on a 2-Day Nautical Adventure in Portugal: Exploring Maritime History from Lisbon to Setúbal
A Sample Itinerary
Day 1: Lisbon – Journey Begins at the Maritime Museum Start your adventure in Lisbon, the heart of Portugal's maritime history. The day begins with a visit to the Museu de Marinha (Maritime Museum), located in the historic Belém district. Here, students will explore Portugal's rich nautical heritage, viewing ancient maritime artifacts, including model ships, navigational instruments, and maps that tell the story of Portugal's explorations. Key exhibits include the history of the Age of Discovery and the evolution of shipbuilding techniques, with a special focus on caravels, the iconic ships used by Portuguese explorers.
After the museum visit, embark on a hands-on learning experience aboard a replica caravel. This journey down the Tagus River towards the Atlantic offers students a unique opportunity to understand the challenges and experiences of 15th and 16th-century Portuguese sailors. Learn about navigation, maritime trade, and the role of these voyages in global exploration and cultural exchanges.
Day 2: Voyage to Setúbal and Exploring Maritime Trade The second day is spent aboard the caravel, continuing the journey southward to Setúbal, a historic port city. Along the way, engage in interactive workshops focusing on maritime trade, navigation techniques, and the ecological impact of historical sea voyages. Students will gain insights into the life of sailors and explorers, understanding the skills and knowledge required for such expeditions.
Arrive in Setúbal and explore its maritime legacy. Visit the local fish market to understand the city's ongoing relationship with the sea. The trip concludes with a reflection session on the beach, discussing the impact of Portugal's maritime history on the modern world, including the spread of cultures, goods, and ideas.
Throughout the trip, expert guides and educators will provide in-depth commentary and facilitate discussions, making Portugal's maritime history come alive in an engaging and educational manner.
