WW1 Poetry Trip to the Somme

Embark on a 3-Day Journey to the Somme: Exploring the Legacy of World War I through Poetry

A Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Introduction to the Somme Begin your journey with an arrival in the Somme region of France, known for its pivotal role in World War I. Start with an introductory session on the history of the Somme battles, setting the stage for understanding the war's impact on poetry and literature. Visit the Somme 1916 Museum in Albert to gain an immersive insight into the life of soldiers during the Great War.

Day 2: The Battlefields and Poets of the Somme Spend the day exploring key battlefields, including the Thiepval Memorial, the Lochnagar Crater, and the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial. At each site, discuss and read poignant WWI poetry, connecting the landscape and historical events to the works of poets like Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, and Isaac Rosenberg. Understand the role of poetry in expressing the harrowing experiences and emotional toll of the war.

Day 3: Reflective Workshops and Departure Conclude your journey with reflective workshops in a tranquil setting near the battlefields. Engage in writing sessions, discussions, and analyses of WWI poetry, encouraging students to express their own responses to the war's legacy and the sites visited. The trip ends with a visit to the Pozières British Cemetery and Memorial, offering a moment to honor the fallen and reflect on the themes explored during the trip.

Throughout the tour, expert guides and educators will provide historical context, literary insights, and facilitate discussions to deepen the understanding of World War I's impact on literature and society.
